Kwara Governor commissions Natural Gas research centre

The commissioning of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited Engineering Research Centre, University of Ilorin. Governor of Kwara State, Abfulfatah Ahmed has commissioned the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited Engineering Research Centre of the University of Ilorin.

While commissioning the multi million Naira edifice constructed by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, Governor Ahmed stressed the need to equip the country's tertiary institutions with state-of-the-art-facilities.

The Governor represented by the State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Engineer Musa Yeketi said the befitting Research Centre would enable the engineering students and researchers better access to world class research and learning.

The Governor, who is also proud to be an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, charged the management of the University to ensure judicious use of the facilities for the development of human capital.

High standards

In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali said the University was one of the six institutions selected across the geo-political zones.

He pointed out that the physical, structural and material development of the project gulped two million Dollars in each of the selected Universities.

Professor Ambali, who noted that the University was selected based on the high standards it has set for itself in the discharge of its mandate, said it would make the institution a prospective reference point for engineering training and research in Africa and one of the best in the world.

The Vice Chancellor assured that the University would remain resolute in its commitment to accelerating development and improving manpower in the country through the generation of high impact knowledge and production of competent engineers that would fast-track development.

Professor Ambali stated that the University had been commissioned by the Nigerian government to solve the problem of oil spillage in the Niger Delta Region, while several advancements had been made in the area of speed limit monitors for vehicles.

Fortunes of nation

In his keynote address, the Managing Director of the Company and an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, Mr. Babs Omotowa said visionary leadership and the right use of resources and technology can change the fortunes of a nation.

Mr. Omotowa noted that the organisation's University support programme was one of the approaches to developing Nigerian human capital and fostering technological advancement in the country.

He added that the selected Universities were chosen based on their relative ranking in their geopolitical zones by the Universities Commission.

VON Correspondent, reports that the beneficiary Universities are the University of Ilorin (North Central), University of Ibadan (South West), Ahmadu Bello University (North West), University of Port Harcourt (South South), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (South East) and University of Maiduguri (North East).
