Salaries: Ahmed makes case for LG teachers
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State yesterday in Ilorin made case for Local Government teachers as regards their salaries in order to get the best out of them.
Governor Ahmed who appealed to the Federal Government to fashion out a workable platform that would ensure that their remunerations were not hindered by any dwindling revenue allocation, emphasised that the teachers particularly at that level were strategic to the country's educational system.
The governor who underscored the roles of teachers in putting basic education on better pedestal while playing host to the Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr Dikko Sulaiman who led others on courtesy call at the Government House, Ilorin, pointed out that attaching their salaries to the Local Government would dampen the whole process more.
Capacity of Local Government Areas across the country to generate revenue according to the governor to meet up at this critical period was low, so, the Federal Government should do something quick if the country's basic education is anything to develop.
He also described education particularly basic education as bedrock of development of any nation, saying that "unless our educational system is supported with entrepreneurship, we will not be able to meet up with 21st century's challenges. "If our education must be developed, teachers must be paid. Payment of teachers at that level is sacrosanct.
The Executive Secretary, UBEC, Dr Dikko Sulaiman had earlier in his remark told the governor that they were in the state for the inspection of the Commission's projects. He also explained that other aspect of intervention by the Commission apart from counterpart funding was the aspect of Teachers Professional Training Development and renovation of dilapidated classrooms among others.
Dikko also told the governor about the establishment of E- Library for the purpose of resuscitating reading culture and stimulate students to read. While praising the state government for paying its counterpart fund regularly, the Executive Secretary disclosed that the Commission had established seven Al-Majiri schools in Kwara with a view to curbing the social menace of out of school students.
