Unilorin woos philanthropists to ease hostel challenges

Date: 2016-02-02

The Director of the University of Ilorin Advancement Centre, Dr. Jeleel Ojuade, has disclosed that the management of the institution is reaching out to the friends of the University and philanthropists for their assistance to ease some of the challenges confronting the institution, especially in the area of hostel accommodation.

Dr. Ojuade, who disclosed this last Tuesday (January 26, 2016) while featuring on a Yoruba current affairs programme, 'Oro t'onlo' on Unilorin 89.3 FM, said that the institution is adopting advocacy visits to philanthropists in order to move the institution forward because the allocation given to Nigerian universities by the Federal Government is not enough to meet the needs of an institution that is striving hard to be among the best in the world.

The Performing Arts scholar pointed out that the institution's advocacy visits have "started yielding fruits, as several developmental projects, sponsored by some of those who have so far responded to our calls, have started springing up on the University campus while some others are expected in the coming months".

Dr. Ojuade specifically disclosed that the courtesy visit by the University Principal Officers, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, to the Ooni of Ife penultimate Friday (January 22, 2016) has started yielding result as a philanthropist and friend of the Ooni pledged to donate solar lantern to the institution and its host community.

He disclosed that some other friends of the University have pledged to support the most patronised institution in the country with hospital equipment worth millions of naira, a golf course, a polo club, and books for the University Library, among other things.

The Director of the Advancement Centre, who described the Vice-Chancellor of the University, as a visionary leader who wants the best for the institution, noted that Prof. Ambali has plans to make the University of Ilorin one of the best in the world. He, however, stressed that funding has been the major constraint of the University administration.

Dr. Ojuade disclosed that efforts are being intensified to have a shuttle train in the University in order to ease the transportation challenges in the institution. He said that the shuttle train will connect all the campuses of the institution.

Dr. Ojuade disclosed that the University of Ilorin is set to host the World Universities Theatre Festival. According to him, the event is designed to promote drama, cinema and the Nigerian culture as well as to celebrate the University of Ilorin as a home of theatre.

The don, however, frowned at the rate at which Nigerian theatre practitioners are promoting indecent dressings through their outlooks and movies. Dr. Ojuade also noted that indecent exposure of the female body is one of the causes of the incessant cases of rape and sexual harassment across the country. He charged parents and guardians to train their children and wards moral lessons for their bright future to be guaranteed.
