Sunday Adewusi, Former IGP, is Dead

Date: 2016-01-27

A former Inspector General of Police, Sunday Adewusi, has passed on.

He died Tuesday at the age of 80.

Police sources said Mr. Adewusi died at the National Hospital at about 9pm after a brief illness.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Bisi Kolawole, confirmed the passage of the former IG.

At age 45, he was appointed IG in 1981 to take over from Adamu Suleiman, thereby making him the youngest officer to head the country’s police force.

Mr. Adewusi was, however, succeeded by Etim Inyang in 1983, barely two years after his promotion.

He was promoted Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1959; Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1962; Superintendent of Police in 1963; Chief Superintendent of Police in 1967.

He became Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1969 and Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1971.

At age 32, he became a Commissioner of Police in 1972 and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in 1975.

His career in the police which took him to practically every part of Nigeria exposed him, first hand, to the beauty of the diversity of the Nigerian nation.

This exposure afforded him the opportunity to gain a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of the cultural heritage of the peoples of Nigeria.

Born in Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nassarawa State to the family of Pa Abraham Ishola Adewusi and Princess Abeje, he began began his educational career at the Church Missionary Society and Roman Catholic Mission Schools from 1944 to 1948.

He proceeded to Baptist Day School, Jos between 1949 and 1950 to complete his Standard Six education.

Mr. Adewusi had his secondary education at Keffi from 1951 to 1956.

He, however, joined the Nigeria Police Force and had his basic police training at the Police College from 1957 to 1958 as a cadet sub-inspector.
