Benin gendarmes invade, hoist flag in Kwara village
Gendarmes from neighbouring Benin Republic recently attacked the border town of Okuta in Baruten LGA of Kwara State and 16 villages, built a police station and hoisted the country's flag there.
This according to Daily Trust findings, contravenes the boundary delineation of 1914 between Britain and France which the two countries had respected. The invaded Nigerian villages include? Ogomne, Bwin, Gandasunon, Kpuru and Woru Wuren Kparu.
Others are Ajuba1, Ajuba 2, Saka Yeruman Kparu, Monta, Dotin Kparu, Halidun Kparu, Yakubun Kparu, Sonsi,Gunosani, Alhaji Kparu, Yodo Mankparu and Simen Kparu.
It was gathered that the Okuta Emirate Council ordered the people of Yakparu to dismantle the flag which is currently with the council.
The visit prompted the hoisting of the Nigerian flag at Ogomue with the subsequent construction of a primary school, a dispensary and an immigration post by the Nigerian authorities to give the villagers a sense of belonging. Since then, the Gerdarmes had left the area until recently when they sent Nigerian government workers in the area parking before establishing their presence through the removal of the Nigerian flag and hoisting of the Benin flag as well as the building of the Gerdarme office there.
The Emir of Okuta, Alhaji Idris Serio Abubakar,? who confirmed the development appealed to the state and federal governments to come to the aid of the people of Okuta.
He said Nigerian teachers, dispensary workers and immigration officers in Ogomue had been sent parking from the Nigerian villages by Benin officials. He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to act before the Benin Republic authorities invade other Nigerian communities in the area.
