Saraki's trial: Kwara APC welcomes apex court ruling on CCT
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State yesterday described theSupreme court's verdict halting the trial of the senate president Bukola Saraki before the Code of Conduct Tribunal as a welcome development.
It said the ruling indicated that the judiciary remains the bastion of hope and could not be hoodwinked by some invisible forces. Saraki is facing 13 count charge before the CCT for alleged false declaration of assets.
The five-man supreme court presided over by Justice John Afolabi Fabiyi stopped the trial in a ruling yesterday.
Speaking on telephone with The Herald, the APC chairman in the state, Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, alleged that the trial of the senate president was politically motivated and designed to humiliate him.
Balogun-Fulani explained that the stoppage of the trial would allow the Supreme Court to adjudicate whether the tribunal was properly constituted in the eyes of the law.
"The judgment is good to allow the Supreme Court to interpret whether the Code of Conduct (Tribunal) is constitutionally constituted or whether they have jurisdiction or they don't have, because as we see it, it (apex court) is the highest court of Nigeria that would be able to adjudicate correctly.
"Also we know this case is malicious. It is a case that is very politicized and meant to humiliate the senate president, that is all. And with this judgment, we are very hopeful that the Supreme Court would do the needful", APC chairman said.
