Kwara records 105 crashes in one year, 25 dead - FRSC

Date: 2015-11-14

The Kwara State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Sunday Maku, on Friday said 25 people have died, while 120 victims were injured in the 105 crashes recorded in the state in the last one year. He noted the figures were a dramatic reduction in crashes in the state in the preceding years.

Speaking on 'The Africa Road Safety Day and World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims' at a media briefing, themed, 'It's time to remember to say no to road crime!' Maku stated that the reduction in crashes and victims was as a result FRSC's aggressive public enlightenment. He added FRSC aimed to reduce crashes and fatalities to the barest minimum, if it was impossible to totally eradicate crashes. He urged road users to be safety conscious and avoid road crimes.

Maku said, "The causative factors of crashes could be categorised into human, mechanical, environment and institutional factors. All of us are familiar with the three first factors but the institutional factor.

"The institutional factors has to do with the government either at the federal, state or local government levels. These three tiers of government are institutions that are supposed to see to road construction, rehabilitation and face-lifting of the roads. If these tiers of government are actually doing their own part of the job, definitely these crashes will be reduced.

"In the past one year in Kwara State, there were about 105 crashes. Out of these crashes, we lost 25 victims and we have 120 injured people that were taken to the hospital. We are trying to ensure that we do not have these 25 casualties on our roads again."
