Date: 2015-10-27

The banking public especially customers of Guarantee Trust Bank Plc, have been urged to be wary over the antics of electronic fraudsters and cyber criminals as they gamble with customers details by sending scam and phishing mails.

The group Managing Director/Chief Executive of GT Bank Mr. Segun Agbaje gave this advice while speaking on electronic banking and e-fraud, from the operator's perspective at the 2015 Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation's workshop for Business Editors and Financial Correspondents of Nigeria (FICAN) held at the Bovina View Hotel Ilorin Kwara State.

Agbaje who was represented by Mr. David Idoko, an assistant manager e-banking division, said that as long as e-banking develops cyber criminals and fraudsters will continue to harvest and try to get at customers exact details through their phishing.

According to him, phishing is a technical term which describe how to trick somebody into providing bank or credit-card information by sending a fraudulent e-mail purporting to be from a bank, Internet provider, etc. asking for verification of an account number or password.

While acknowledging that electronic platforms, e-cards, deposit through ATM cards balance enquiries via ATM, POS have tremendously fast tracks transactions at branch levels.

According to him, customer make GTBank account to account transfers – use instant transfers to other bank using Nigerian Electronic Fund transfers, and make bills payment including airtime top up and 737 airtime purchase top up with their banking platform.

Furthermore he said that GTBank has evolved supervision and monitoring of tokens maintained at the branches, and 24 hour on-line monitoring of transactions to detect usual pattern, stressing that they should not compromise their identities. However, he said that once a customer alerts the bank regarding unauthorized transactions on the account through his cards, the branch had developed branch level resolution which begins within the customer filling a dispute resolution form.

This will be followed by obtaining the cabinet of the customer to hotlist the card and account, this will make sure that no electronic transaction will be successful during the hot listing in the case of cross border, infringement, the customer is expected to send a dispute form to card risk, during the period, the bank stop all electronic transactions on the account.

Similarly when a customer notifies the bank about unauthorized airtime purchase, Idoko said that the bank will restrict the account immediately in order to forestall further unauthorized airtime purchase and ascertain whether his current customer is the same number registered to his account on the internal system. He warned customers to guard their identity, pre number and cards, stressing that in same cyber cases, fraudster had used the card number and three digit details at the back of the card enough to enable them track into the account stressing that customers should not fall for the scam mails.
