Councillors Suspend Council Chairman from Office in Kwara

Date: 2015-10-22

Councillors in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State have suspended the chairman of the council, Abdulmaaruf Thanni, from office with immediate effect for three months for alleged financial recklessness.

THISDAY checks revealed that nine out of the 11 councillors were said to have been involved in the suspension.

It was gathered that, the vice chairman of the council, Hon. Joseph Ajayi? has been directed to take over the mantle of leadership of the council pending expiration of the time of the council chairman suspension from the office.

The legislators, according to the sources close to the council, took the decision at the sitting of the legislative council presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Jolayemi Julius, on Tuesday.

Other councillors present at the proceeding include Awodele A. Balogun (Owu ward), Samuel A. Olabamiji (Isanlu ward I), Ayo A. Julius (Oke-Aba ward), Bisi Oloyede (Pamo/Sabaja ward II), Bisi Adebayo (Isanlu ward II), Oyatoye T. Felix (Edidi ward), Mrs. Arowoduye O. Victoria (Iwo ward) and Omotosho K. Abdulrasaq (Oke-Onigbin ward). Those who were absent at the sitting were Ogundele S. Olawale (Ijara ward) and Adeoti J. Sunday (Alla ward).

The councilors in a statement directed the suspended chairman to hand over all the necessary documents of the council to his deputy, Mr. Joseph Ajayi, ordering Ajayi to take over the administration of the council. They also accused the suspended chairman of engaging the services of hoodlums to disrupt their proceedings.

The statement read: "We the undersigned councilors in Isin local government area rose in the House today 20th October, 2015 to suspend the executive chairman for three months effective from today.

"As the House sat today (Tuesday) to discuss on the alleged misappropriation of funds by the chairman, suspected hoodlums invaded the council chambers to disrupt our sitting.

The incessant threats of thugs to the house led us to take such action against the chairman."

However, all efforts to speak with the suspended council chairman, Hon. Thani for comment on the development on Wednesday proved abortive as all telephone calls made to his phone were unsuccessful as the line was said to have been switched off.
