JSS 3 girl commits suicide over love affair

Date: 2015-08-07

A 14 year-old girl yesterday committed suicide in Ilorin after a disagreement with her boyfriend who allegedly threatened to kill her over an affair with another lover.

Aishat Oba, a Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) student of Burihanudeen UBE School, Isale-Koko Ilorin, was said to have taken a poisonous substance believed to be an insecticide at Ile-Olowo Compound in Opo-Malu Area of the city.

Her boyfriend, Rafiu, is presently on the run, while the second lover was arrested by the police yesterday.

Aishat would have turned 15 years on September 18.

It was gathered that Rafiu, 20, who claimed to be a member of the Oodua People's Congress (OPC), allegedly threatened to cause a stir at Aishat's compound if she was found to be in a secret affair with the alleged lover boy.

The girl who was gasping for breath after drinking the substance was rushed to a private hospital and later referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) where she was pronounced dead.

Spokesman of the Kwara State Police Command, Mr Okasanmi Ajayi, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.
