Kwara not owing WAEC, says Ahmed
The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, on Sunday, said the state was not among the states owing the West African Examinations Council N4bn examination fees.
The governor also said there was no plan to transfer the management of the state-owned tertiary institutions to the Harmony Holdings Limited. HHL is a company of the state government.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to Ahmed on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said that secondary school students in the state had been enlisting for the National Examinations Council examinations instead of WAEC.
The statement noted that the state government recently released N78m as examination fees to NECO.
The governor assured students and parents in the state that no examination results would be withheld by the examination body on account of non-payment of fees.
The government also said that Harmony Holdings Limited was established to manage the state government's dormant assets.
It said that HHL, therefore, had no mandate to take over any state-owned tertiary institution.
It stated that all government tertiary institutions in the state were established by law and could not be handed over to HHL or any other body without an approval from the state House of Assembly and the people of Kwara State.
The state government, therefore, called on the public to ignore the rumour which it said was being sponsored by those seeking to rubbish the success achieved by HHL since its inception.
It also said that HHL had turned around the fortunes of companies under its management and had started paying dividend to the state government.
