400 register for Unilorin half marathon
Over 400 athletes from various institutions in Kwara State have so far registered to participate in the maiden edition of the University of Ilorin Marathon slated for October 20.
Chairman of University of Ilorin Sports Council, Professor Uche Bassey Eke, who disclosed this during a visit to Oba Mohammed Mufutau Gbadamosi, Esuwoye II, said that over 400 participants had indicated interest to participate in the competition.
He added that participants would primarily be students of the University of Ilorin and recognised higher institutions in the state, as a way of improving the relationship among higher institutions in the state.
According to Eke, the event would be used to celebrate academic stability of the institution, its 40th anniversary and as part of the convocation activities. The monarch commended University of Ilorin for its academic excellence and innovation and pledged his support for the competition.
Eke who presented certificate of appointment as patron to the monarch described the royal father as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and sportsman. He sought his support towards the successful organisation of the 21 kilometer race. Also speaking, the Director of Sports, University of Ilorin, Professor Adetayo Talabi explained that orgnisers have gotten assurances and support from Patrons, Grand Patrons, sponsors and partners ahead of the event.
He averred that more athletes will register ahead of the closing date, as he expressed confidence that they have the technical capacity and ability to cope with the challenges.
The race is expected to take off from Tanke area of Ilorin, through tipper garage, through University Staff quarters, through the University academic areas and finish at the University of Ilorin stadium.
Five athletes, in both male and female categories will win prizes, with the winners expected to get N300, 000. Consolation prizes would be made available. The university has continued to get support from individuals, corporate organisations and philanthropists, the latest being the Olofa of Offa in Offa Local Government Area of the state, Oba Mohammed Mufutau Gbadamosi, Esuwoye II, who has pledged support for the event.
