'Like-Minds' senators vow to produce next Senate president, deputy

Date: 2015-05-20

A group of senators under the auspices of 'Like-Minds' have resolved to ensure that one of their members emerge as the next Senate president.

A ranking senator who is a member of the group told Daily Trust yesterday that the group was initially formed by a few returning senators but was later expanded to include newly elected lawmakers.

'Like Minds' is being convened by Kogi senator-elect Dino Melaye. The group, the senator said, has 65 senators as members and "more senators are indicating interest to join."

Daily Trust gathered that 15 South-South senators under the leadership of Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill Akpabio are members of the ''Like Minds'.

"We are working to get the three Rivers senators to join us. With our number, we must produce the next Senate president," the senator said.

Prominent members of the 'Like Minds' include Dino Melaye, Godswill Akpabio, Danjuma Goje, Ali Ndume, Bukola Saraki and others.

Sources close to the group said they have resolved to support any member of the group to emerge as Senate president and deputy Senate president if the All Progressives Congress (APC) announces its zoning formula.

The race for the Senate presidency is still between senators Ahmad Lawan (Yobe), George Akume (Benue), Ali Ndume (Borno) and Bukola Saraki (Kwara), all of whom are from the North Central and North East zones.
