Two female students held for stealing handsets
Two female students, Omosuyi Olanireti, 24 of Poka Royal Suite, and Ologun Tolulope, 18 both of Tanke, Oke-Odo, Ilorin, who allegedly trespassed into a shop where they stole handsets, have appeared before an Ilorin Magistrate Court.
The accused allegedly stole the handsets from a wine and liquor shop at Tanke, Oke-Odo, Ilorin, where they went to price wines to celebrate their birthday.
They were dragged before the court on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft. The offences contravene Sections 97 and 287 of Penal Code Law.
The accused who are 100 Level Linguistics students of a higher institute in Ilorin allegedly committed the crime on March 3, 2012 when they criminally conspired to steal a Nokia X2-01 and starcomm Mobile GSM at the said shop.
The stolen GSM handsets valued N20,000 was said to have belong to the shop attendant.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that investigation conducted at the 'F' Divisional Police Station, Tanke, Ilorin, revealed that the accused were pricing all the wines at the shop in order to distract the attention of the shop attendant before stolen the Mobile GSM handsets
The FIR added that the Omosuyi Olanireti (first accused) was seen by the shop attendant putting something in her laptop bag which made him to suspect a foul play.
The FIR stated that the accused committed the offences.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Mathew Ologbosaye, who had informed the court that investigation into the matter is still ongoing, objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand them at the prison custody, Ilorin, pending the outcome of the investigation.
He submitted further that if the accused were admitted to bail at this stage of the trial they might jump bail having known the gravity of the alleged offence, which in turn would jeopardize the ongoing investigation.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the allegations and prayed the court to admit them to bail pending their trial.
The judge, Magistrate S.O. Sambo did not granted the prayer of the prosecutor as he admitted the accused to bail each at the sum of N10,000 and a surety in the same amount.
The court adjourned the case till May 22, 2012 for further mention.
