Kwara First Lady Advocates Better Life for Nigerian widows
Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, the wife of Kwara State Governor, on Wednesday, advocated for better life for Nigerian widows.
She made the call at an empowerment programme for widows organised by Gbenga Power Foundation (GPF) in Ilorin.
Ahmed, who is the founder of LEAH Charity Foundation, added that widows should be empowered as was being done for youths, the physically challenged and others.
The governor's wife expressed concern over the plight of widows, saying "widows are always at the mercy of whatever the society throws at them."
She then urged well-meaning individuals and groups to show love to them.
She commended Mr Gbenga Stephen, the founder of Gbenga Power Foundation for supporting the widows, noting that "it takes the grace of God to show love and empower people."
Stephen, in his remarks, charged Nigerians not to leave the empowerment of the needy to government and groups alone, but share whatever they had with those in need.
He said supporting the widow was a commandment which has a reward, pointing out that "when you give, you are helping yourself."
He added that the empowerment programme of the Foundation was aimed at complementing the governor's wife's legacy, and also, in line with one of the visions of the Foundation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that more than 150 widows went home with 10kg bag of rice and one litre of vegetable oil each.
Also, the governor's wife donated six yards of clothing material to each of the widows and selected widows who are below 40 years for special empowerment by the office of the first lady.
Responding on behalf of other widows, Mrs Felicia Abbas, commended the Kwara first lady and the Gbenga Power Foundation for their love and passion for them. (NAN)
