Kwara table water producers embark on strike
The Kwara State chapter of Association of Table Water Producers of Nigeria has embarked on strike over consumers rejection of increase in price of sachet water, popularly known as pure water, in the state.
Daily Trust reports that the pure water producers had earlier informed members of the public of the proposed price hike which would bring a bag of pure water from N80 to N120 and a sachet from N5 to N10.
It would be recalled that pure water was sold for N10 until June when the price was reverted to the original N5, following mounting pressure from members of the public.
Chairman of the association, Prince Adeleke Adewumi, penultimate week, told Daily Trust correspondent that the producers could no longer cope with the present price, urging the consumers to accept the planned increment in good faith.
However, as part of the move to increase the price, the producers have embarked on strike leading to scarcity of pure water within the metropolis.
Daily Trust gathered that most pure water trucks and vans have stopped supplying the product, while the retailers said they have ran out of stock.
Commenting on the latest development, the Chairman stressed that the increment became necessary due to increase in cost of production and the producers' desire to sell quality products to their customers.
He noted that the association has procured quality equipment and introduced technical innovations to enable members of the association produce quality and hygienic water. He disclosed that the association would clamp down on unregistered sachets water producers in the state to sanitise the market and check quacks.
However, some retailers and members of the community who spoke with Daily Trust said they would not accept any hike in price.
