'Governors, others should patronise public schools'
Professor Saka Mahmud of Kwara State University, yesterday, advised Nigerian government officials especially governors to demonstrate their commitment to quality education by sending their children to public schools.
Mahmud said this is the only way to arrest the dwindling education standard in Nigeria.
He spoke in Ilorin, during the centenary lecture and book launch organised by Government Secondary School (GSS), Ilorin, Old Boys' Association as part of activities marking 100 years anniversary of the school.
Mahmud, who is also an old boy of the college, said: "Government officials can only demonstrate their commitment and seriousness to public education which most of them had benefited from by sending their children to government schools."
He lamented the state of infrastructure of the school even as he noted that the situation is not peculiar to it.
The don identified corruption, decaying infrastructure, mass failures in standard examinations, poor funding and uncontrolled population and examination malpractices as major indicators of the declining education standard.
He advocated for increase in budgetary allocation to education in line with UNESCO recommendation.
