Why we suspended political rallies - Kwara police
The Kwara State Police Command yesterday said it suspended political rallies, meetings and processions in the state to prevent threat to lives and property. Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ambrose Aisabo, in an interview with Daily Trust, said the police did not ban rallies as being insinuated, but that they were suspended till further notice.
The police had on Wednesday ordered that no political rallies, processions or meetings should be held until further notice.
The command in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Okasanmi Ajayi, also warned politicians to steer clear of polling units during the voters' registration exercise.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has kicked against the ban, which he described as illegal and "an affront to democracy and Nigerian constitution".
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on its part said it is totally in support of the ban, adding, "All the police command seeks to prevent is the continued degeneration of the security of the state and nothing more".
Speaking with Daily Trust, the commissioner of police reiterated the suspension order, challenging those who are against it to go to court.
"We can do anything to ensure security of lives and property" he said. He said the police would continuously review the security situation and that at the appropriate time, the suspension would be lifted.
"We will from time to time review the security situation in the state and take appropriate action", he said.
