We won't impose candidates - Kwara APC
Ahead of the 2015 elections, Alhaji Yusuf Aiyedun, the Chairman, APC Council of Elders, Kwara South District, says the party will not impose any candidate.
Aiyedun said this on Tuesday at the party's general meeting in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara.
The party chieftain said that all eligible persons would be allowed to contest the primaries.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the council was on tour of the seven local governments within Kwara South District to intimate party members on recent developments in the party.
The Senatorial district comprises Ifelodun, Irepodun, Oke-Ero, Ekiti, Oyun, Isin and Offa Local Governments.
"I want to use this medium to appeal to candidates willing to contest any elective post in the next general elections to work very hard.
"I am also saying this in unequivocal terms that the party is not ready to impose any candidate on the people for any reason.
"Only party loyalists, honest and trusted men and women chosen by their communities, would be given the chance as the party's flag bearers," Aiyedun said.
He said that the state executive of the party had put in place effective mobilisation strategies for the party to come out victorious in the general elections.
Aiyedun advised party members to be cautious of those they put forward as their flag bearers for the elections, urging them to eschew rumour.
He said the local government councils were presently passing through a trying period as a result of paucity of funds and urged party members to extend their cooperation and support to achieve desired results.
Aiyedun also urged aggrieved members of the party to embrace dialogue in resolving political differences.
"Any member who feels slighted for any reason whatsoever can approach the council. That is why this council was set up in the first place," he said.
Chief Peter Oyinloye, the President, Omu-Aran Development Association, urged the council to assist the community over the indefinite closure of commercial banks in the town.
"Our people have been suffering endlessly as a result of the closure of the banks due to armed robbery attacks since last year.
"The community has been doing its best, including the recent donation of two Hilux vehicles, to assist the security agencies, yet the banks are yet to reopen," he said.
A former chairmanship aspirant in Irepodun Local Government, Alhaji Abdulraheem Olawuyi, also urged the party elders to always consider members close to the grassroots for party positions.
The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Luqman Owolewa, expressed confidence in the ability of the council to ensure unity and the overall success of the party.
