Court Remands Man For Killing 3-year-old Son.
A 35-year-old Fulani herdsman, Mohammed Kariya of Gwasoro Fulani Camp, has been remanded by an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court for allegedly hacking his son to death with a machete.
The accused allegedly went to the camp where his wife, Hada Mohammed, was residing on March 10, 2014, at about 2:30pm, took a machete to his three-year-old son, Hassan Mohammed, hacking him to death.
According to the police, Kariya repeated the same act on another three-year-old, Ahmed Usman, inflicting deep cuts on his stomach and rupturing his innards.
Kariya was arraigned on a two-count charge of causing grievous hurt and culpable homicide, contrary to sections 248 and 221 of the Penal Code of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The case which was transferred from the Yashikira Police Division to the Department of Criminal Investigation, Ilorin, for discreet investigation, was reported by one Jibo Abubakar on March 15, 2014.
The police prosecutor, Bilikisu Adu, objected to the bail of the accused and requested the court to remand him in prison custody.
She argued that the offences for which the accused had been charged are “not ordinarily bailable” and that the court lacks jurisdiction to grant the accused bail.
If granted bail, she argued, the accused may commit similar offence and also tamper with on-going police investigation into the matter.
Magistrate Noah Ajide ordered that the accused be remanded in custody, pending the determination of trial and adjourned the case till April 14.
