Kwara to Name Street in Ilorin after Awoniyi

Date: 2014-03-12

The Kwara State House of Assembly yesterday declared that it has finalised arrangements to name a major street in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital after a Nigeria player, Mr. Taiwo Awoniyi who was part of the team that did the country proud last year, winning the FIFA Under-17 World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Speaker of the House, Hon. Abdulrazak Atunwa, disclosed this while receiving the player and his parents, Chief and Mrs. Awoniyi in his office in Ilorin yesterday.

According to the speaker, there is no doubt that the player performed very well during the competition and even placed the name of Kwara State on the world map being an indigene of the state.'

He said that the exemplary performance of the footballer who scored four goals for the Golden Eaglets during the competition needed to be recognized so as to encourage him to do more in the nearest future for the country.
Atunwa added that sport has remained a major tool to develop oneself, noting that Awoniyi had done a great job during the competition and so deserved to be recognised.

The speaker advised the player to continue to train hard so as to further develop himself and increase on his present performance stressing that, in doing so, he would make him one of the best footballers in the world.
The speaker also urged Awoniyi to continue to be humble as he has always been and not  allow the success he has achieved to get to his head.

Earlier, the Manager of Awoniyi, Mr. Goke Osatoba, said that, the footballer started his career at the Ilorin Teachers College field where he distinguished himself before travelling to Britain on the sponsorship of Coca-Cola.
He said that, the tough training that he underwent in the hands of Coach Olojo prepared him for the success he has attained in the game today.

Osatoba however said that, the footballer has already been contracted by a club in Europe.
