The Senate of the National Assembly today confirmed the appointment of Prof. Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem as the Chairman Federal Character Commission (FCC) for a second term of five years. Prof  Abdulraheem had served his first tenure from  2008 to 2013.

Although he left the position to contest the gubernatorial primaries of the PDP in Kwara State, party intrigues did not favour him. The development made him returned to his position as the FCC Chairman with some opposition from within the FCC and some human right activists.

However, the greatest  and most interesting opposition to Prof Abdulraheem’s career at the FCC came when he completed his first tenure this year and was re-nominated by the Presidency for a second term.

Citing lack of deference to the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki in Kwara politics, the Kwara PDP mounted the most strident opposition against the reappointment of Prof Abdulraheem leading to several battles in both online media and physical throwing of darts. Both Prof Abdulraheem and Senator Bukola Saraki are not only from Ilorin-West local government but are also from Ajikobi ward.

Watchers of Kwara politics will be keen on how things unfold especially that Senator Saraki had led his group to APC while Abdulraheem seems to have been saddled with rallying the remnant of the PDP in Kwara State for political battle against the formidable Saraki political machinery in Kwara State.
