Family petitions IG, others over alleged Kwara governors wife's killer convoy

Date: 2013-11-24

A new twist is trailing controversies linked to the death of pedestrians in Lagos by a trailer aiming to avoid the reckless driving of a Kwara State government convoy as the family of one the victims has alleged fear for their safety.

The female victim, Mrs. Victoria Adeoye's family has raised concern over the safety of their lives for insisting on justice for the avoidable death of their matriarch.

The late woman's son in Abuja, Dr Segun Adeoye lamented the insensitivity of the Kwara State governor's wife, Omolewa Ahmed's office in releasing press statements that are contrary to events and absolving her convoy from the incident.

In a protest letter made available to The Guardian at the weekend and copied to the Inspector General of Police, human rights commission, the Adeoyes claim that numerous eyewitness accounts collaborated the incident of the convoy's recklessness.

The letter tagged: " Case of manslaughter by the reckless convoy of Kwara State First Lady, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed and a tipper trailer with registration No. Epe 160 XA that unlawfully killed two persons on the spot and wounded several others on Wednesday, November 13,  2013 at the U-turn bus stop of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway."

The family noted that: "The government convoy had stopped to visit a patient named as one General Kollington Ayinla (a popular Nigerian musician) admitted at one Hamkad Hospital Nigeria Limited (who shortly after the incident and due to the fear of the likelihood of the irate sympathisers of the victim invading the said hospital and in order to cover up the identity of the convoy that visited him in the hospital was then transferred to another private hospital in the neighbourhood.

"Several eyewitness accounts confirmed that the plate numbers of the vehicles were covered; however, policemen in Mrs. Ahmed's convoy had freely chatted with people in the area during the period their boss was in the hospital and disclosed that they were from Kwara State," the letter stated.

The family regretted that "Kwara State government has refused to take full responsibility of their actions that resulted in the loss of two lives on the spot and many several others injured."
