Kwara Poly Rector Reflects on Student's Shooting
Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Alhaji Mas’ud Elelu, has said that the June 3 shooting of a student of the polytechnic by a policeman on a bullion van was “like a dark cloud befalling the institution”.
It would be recalled that the shooting of the student identified as Ahmed Dayo, triggered massive students’ protest for two days, thereby disrupting social and commercial activities in Ilorin, the state capital.
The student, it was gathered, has been discharged from the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) and is currently on crutches.
Speaking at the end of session and special award ceremony organised by the polytechnic, the rector thanked God that the student did not die as was erroneously reported online.
Chairman, Governing Council of the polytechnic, Professor Shehu Jimoh, challenged institutions of learning to always look inward to see how they could augment government’s subvention.
He challenged heads and directors of departments of the polytechnic to build a new institution devoid of admission racketeering, sexual harassment, among others.
