Kwara Reassures on Security, Appeals for Calm

Date: 2012-01-03

The Kwara State Government has restated its preparedness to employ all constitutional means to protect lives and property in the state following violent protests in Ilorin, the state capital, against the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government. In a statement by Prince Tunji Moronfoye, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, the government said it is working with all security agencies to prevent a repeat of the ugly incident, adding that it was regrettable that the otherwise peaceful protest was marred by violence.

Prince Moronfoye appealled to residents of the state to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses as security agents are on guard across the state to forestall any further breakdown of law and order. According to him, the state government has ordered immediate and full-scale investigation into circumstances sorrounding the grave incident with a view to preventing reoccurence.

While appealling to the people not to allow opportunists to hijack a legitimate protest for political or personal gain, the government enjoined all aggrieved parties to express their grievances regarding the Federal Govenment's decision to end the subsidy on fuel, through constitutionally-sanctioned means.
