LG poll: I won't impose candidates, Saraki assures supporters

Date: 2013-08-27

The leader of People's Democratic Party in Kwara State, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki has stated that he would not impose any candidate in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

Addressing People Democratic Party (PDP) supporters at the Charity Home, GRA, Ilofa Road, Ilorin , Saraki said people's decision would  prevail in the choice of candidates for the October 26 local government elections.

"I don't have anointed candidates, and leaders in each local government should not have favourites. I thanked God that majority of the candidates that have emerged so far are people's candidates,"he observed.

He however reiterated that any candidate that is sponsored by any political office holder would be disqualified.

"I heard that some people had already signed agreements with some leaders who are their godfathers on the need to compensate them after the election, those candidates have been identified and they will face outright disqualification,"he affirmed.

According to the former state governor, "liberal candidates would be chosen for each position in the interest of progress, development and growth of the party.”

Speaking on the councilors position, Saraki declared that only 5 out of 193 wards across the 16 local government areas are yet to be resolved and made a pledge that those five would be resolved shortly.

He called on supporters of PDP to come out en-mass and vote massively for the party so as to enable PDP record a clean sweep in the October local government election in the state.

Earlier in his address, the state PDP Chairman, Hon. Ishola Balogun Fulani disclosed that the party has put every machinery in motion to ensure that the right candidates emerged.

He assured stakeholders that selection of candidates would not be made unilaterally, adding every interest would be put into consideration so that whoever emerges would be acceptable by all.
