Lecturer laments lack of modern research facilities, funding
A lecturer at the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Dr. Oluwole Busayo Akinola, has said that inadequate funding and obsolete facilities constitute impediments to research in Nigeria.
Akinola, also an International Brain Research Organisation, IBRO, Research Fellow at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland, USA, stated this at a seminar in Ilorin last Friday, nothing that the major constraint of research is funding and non-availability of facilities.
He pointed out that "I am aware of the ETF fund for research but sometimes it is difficult to actually access such funds. Although the University is trying, it is still a far cry from reality".
In this vein, he advised the University of Ilorin authorities to do more by collaborating with industries that may want to support research. "We have few of such in Nigeria but abroad many Universities are serviced by corporations, pharmaceutical companies, motor manufacturing companies, computer companies but we don't have many of such in Nigeria, so research fund is very scarce".
Earlier in his remarks, NISEB Chairman, Dr. Lawrence Aderemi Olatunji, said that the body is concerned about ensuring that scientists are doing what they are meant to do in addition to carrying out research to affect humanity positively.
