I Am Fulfilled Forming Bukola Babes -Abdul Adama

Date: 2012-03-17

Founder of Bukola Babes FC now Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC of Ilorin, Alhaji Abdul Adama spoke on the exploits of the club in this interview.

With the transformation of Bukola Babes FC to ABS FC, what is your position in the team now?
The team started as Bukola Babes, and now Abubakar Bukola Saraki, ABS FC. It's only the name that was transformed, as far as I am concerned. If there is any other thing that will change may be, it would be the position of the Chairman. You will agree with me that I cannot be doing my work and other businesses and still remain with the team 100 per cent. I am a farmer, and my plan now is how to contribute to the development of my state, Kogi State. So, I do not think my boss, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki would want me to continue to be Chairman of the club. When it was Bukola Babes FC, I was seated here in Ilorin. I expect another Chairman, but for now, I am the Acting Chairman, and I have all members of my management team intact.

If you leave now, would you miss football management?
I am already missing it. But I do not have a choice. One thing we have to understand is that, we need a bit of indigenous management members, especially the Chairman of the club. I would advise my boss on this issue. They look at the team from Alhaji Abdul Adama from Kogi State, coming to challenge

Kwara United, which is the state team, and the traditional team in Ilorin. They are also looking at it from the angle of Mr Alloy Chukwuemeka from Imo state you know. They used to call Bukola Babes FC an Igbo team with a Yoruba name. But that notion is gradually changing now that people have been convinced that the team now belongs to Saraki 100 per cent. Senator Saraki came to the stadium to cheer them in one of the home matches, and that was after hosting the team the same day before the match.

Looking back at how you started in 2004, coupled with the challenges and the new arrangement, would you say you are fulfilled?
I am a very, very fulfilled man. When I formed Bukola Babes FC, I never knew it would grow to be something that would bring out my name like this. I was just looking at the boys that I was encouraging. I was just looking at the name I was promoting. But today you know I cannot imagine it. I am fulfilled. Even if I didn't do anything  in football again, I am fulfilled now. I have made a mark, and anybody who wants to make the kind of mark I have made, it would take him even more than seven years that it took me, to get there.

Seven years to go and form a team from nowhere, two years to nurture the team and get into the league and reach our level. Why wouldn't I be a fulfilled man?

You adopted the name Bukola Babes just to draw Saraki into the team. But after seven years, he is now the owner. What are the advantages you derived from adopting his name?
Senator Bukola Saraki himself was a former player of this team. And as we move from step to step, we benefited immensely from his goodwill. I think that his agreement to take over fully was because he doesn't want the team to leave Kwara State. You would recall that we put the club up for sale immediately after the end of last season. That was my suspicion. Because he saw it coming. It was almost going out of the state. Again, my boss doesn't just venture into a business without studying the situation. He has studied the situation enough, including the aspect of sustainability.
