Belgore urges probe of police shooting Kwara poly student
Kwara ACN chieftain, Mohammed Dele Belgore SAN, has called for a probe of the shooting of a Kwara Polytechnic student by a policeman. The student, Ahmed Adewale, was shot on Monday by a policeman escorting a bullion van.
Belgore spoke in a statement by his media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye.
While urging caution on the side of the security agencies and Kwara Polytechnic students, Belgore said "We urge caution on the side of the security agencies especially the police and the Kwara State Polytechnic students who are genuinely irked by the alleged shooting of their colleague. In order to avoid a repeat of this ugly incident, we call on the state government and the police authorities to thoroughly investigate this matter.
"We recall that a similar incident of avoidable shooting had led to the killing, also in Ilorin, of one Muyideen Mustapha Opobiyi, who was involved in the fuel subsidy protest of January 2012.Maybe this latest shooting would have been averted had thorough investigation been done into that sad incident of 2012.
"While we acknowledge that a greater number of our policemen are law-abiding and dutiful, we cannot shut our eyes to the excesses of some bad eggs in the Force. We therefore urge the security agencies to always exercise restraint and professionalism even in the face of provocations from the populace."
Belgore urged the Kwara State government to borrow a leaf from the way the case of the fuel subsidy protester that was murdered by the police was handled in Lagos.
He said "It is interesting to note that a police officer who murdered another fuel subsidy protester, Ademola Aderinto, in Lagos has now been dismissed from the Force because of the efforts of the Lagos State Government which not only insisted on the police producing the culprit but also instituted criminal prosecution against the
policeman.
"Should it be found after due investigation that the police have acted unlawfully, the Kwara State Government should not sit on the sidelines but should act in similar vein."
