200 PDP Members Defect to ACN in Kwara

Date: 2013-05-13

Over 200 members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State at the weekend defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The former PDP supporters were said to have openly burnt their umbrellas with the inscriptions of the party at Agbonda in Ajase- Ipo Ward 2 of Irepodun Local Government Area of the state before joining the ACN.

The defectors, who are predominantly farmers, complained of neglect and lack of assistance by the PDP-led government.

Mr. Joshua otherwise known as Baba Damilola, a local politician led the defectors to the ACN.

He said: “We have worked for the PDP in the past and there is nothing to show for it, we are tired of empty promises. ACN governments in Osun and Ekiti states have impressed us by what they have done for their people. We have seen what they have done because we share boundaries with those two states.”

Receiving the defectors, ACN Chairman in Irepodun Local Government Area, Prince Tunde Oyeyipo, said: “This not the first time we are giving things out, we just gave a tricycle to a disabled young man in Ijomu- Oro this afternoon. We have sunk motorized boreholes in Arandun, Oko and Olowonnijere and connected Olomioja among others.

“Our party will heal our land, we have 100 per cent assurance that we will win in any election.”

But PDP said the caretaker committee set up to run the affairs of the embattled ACN would fail because of “deep cleavages and conflicting ambitions of its leaders.”
