Kwara: Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentence for Phone Armed Robber

Date: 2013-05-11

The Supreme Court, yesterday in Abuja ordered that the ring leader of a notorious armed robbery gang who has been giving the people of Kwara State sleepless nights is to die by hanging for stealing a handset.

The apex court in a unanimous decision also restored the decision of the high court which has earlier sentenced the accused person to death by hanging.

The convicted armed robber - Salisu Isiaka who pleaded not guilty was dissatisfied with the death sentence passed on him by the High Court and appealed to the Court of Appeal which set aside the decision of the high court and released the condemned robber from prison.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Stanley Alagoa, the apex court held that the high court was right, adding that the prosecution has proved its case beyond reasonable doubt as the death sentence was proper.

Trouble started on August 27, 2009 in the evening hours when Mulikat AbdulKareem was attacked by Isiaka who was armed with cudgel with which he hits his victim on her head several times until she was dispossessed of her handset.

Luck, however, ran out on him when the police who were on patrol in the area got a distress call and raced to the scene.

He was shot on the leg by the police, but managed to escape to a nearby house from where he was arrested.
