Kwara Communities Raise Alarm over 'Illegal' Immigrants
Some communities in Asa local government area of Kwara state have raised alarm out over alleged invasion of their territories by illegal immigrants who raped women and damaged farm lands.
The communities, under the auspices of United Communities Farmers Association, have petitioned the state’s house of assembly on this development.
The petition entitled "save our communities from invasion by illegal immigrants" was presented on the floor of the House by the member representing Oke-Ero constituency, Dr. Abraham Ashoolu, at a plenary.
The communities said in the petition that alleged illegal immigrants who had been in their midst for quite some time were parading themselves as Bororo herdsmen.
They alleged that the unwanted visitors have caused damage to their farmlands, water and other valuables.
"The immigrants also caused damage to our various economic trees which serve as means of livelihood to us apart from raping our wives in the farms."
The petitioners urged the House of Assembly and other relevant agencies to come to their aid by solving the problem which they claimed is depriving them from pursuing their economic activities.
Deputy Speaker, Prof. Gana Yissa, who presided over the plenary directed the Committees on Agriculture and Water Resources to investigate the matter and report back to the House on April 9, 2013.
