Hakeem Lawal Says APC Will Remain Dominant in Kwara Beyond 2027
The 2023 governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party> in Kwara State, Hakeem Lawal, has said the All Progressives Congress will remain dominant in the state's politics beyond the 2027 general elections.
He dismissed the likelihood of another political shift similar to the 2019 "Otoge" movement, maintaining that the ruling party retains strong grassroots support and an established political structure capable of sustaining its hold on power.
Speaking with Sunday PUNCH on Friday, Lawal described his recent return to the APC as a strategic decision aimed at contributing more effectively to governance and development in the state, rather than pursuing personal ambition.
He rejected claims that his defection was influenced by political calculations ahead of 2027, explaining that his move followed a reassessment of the SDP's capacity to deliver governance outcomes.
"Politics, for me, has always been about impact and service, not sentiment. After consultations across the state, it became clear that my experience and structure would be better utilised within the APC," he said.
"Every politician has ambition, but personal ambition must not override collective interest. If 2027 was my sole focus, I would have returned much earlier."
Lawal described the APC as his "political home," noting that previous disagreements that led to his departure had been resolved through dialogue and reconciliation.
According to him, ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party are focused on strengthening unity and bringing back aggrieved stakeholders who exited after the 2019 political realignment.
"I left based on principle, particularly around membership issues, but those concerns have now been addressed. Politics should not be driven by bitterness," he said.
"There are deliberate moves to rebuild trust. A united party strengthens governance and improves service delivery."
On speculation about a possible repeat of the 2019 political wave, Lawal said the current opposition lacks the cohesion and momentum required to mount a similar movement.
He, however, cautioned the APC against complacency, emphasising the importance of continuous grassroots engagement and responsiveness to public concerns.
"The party must keep listening to the people. Sustaining political control depends on performance and connection with the grassroots," he added.
Lawal disclosed that his political structure across the state moved with him to the APC, describing it as a collective decision reflective of his grassroots base.
He said his immediate focus would be on strengthening the party, mobilising voters, mentoring younger politicians, and contributing to policy discussions aimed at advancing development in Kwara State.
