Tension at George Innih Stadium as Fans Mistake Journalist for Referee

Date: 2026-02-16

Tension gripped the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl at George Innih Stadium, Ilorin, on Sunday when a journalist was briefly mobbed by young supporters following the Matchday 26 clash between Kwara United and Kano Pillars.

The highly contested fixture ended in a 1-1 draw, but fans reportedly misidentified journalist Sodiq Adebara as one of the referees, prompting anger over some controversial decisions in the closing stages of the game.

Eyewitnesses said the situation was swiftly contained by members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State chapter, including Chairman Mallam Ayodeji Ismail, alongside Abdul Momoh, Toyin Saheed, Mallam Mustapha Abubakar, and Bolaji Yaqub, ensuring the safety of the affected journalist.

Supporters had expressed frustration over what they deemed questionable officiating, though no injuries were reported during the incident.

Stakeholders have since called for calm, urging fans to channel their grievances through peaceful and lawful means to prevent escalation in future matches.
