COE Students Protest over Non-Remittance of Fees to University

Date: 2013-02-15

Students of College of Education Ilorin undergoing degree sandwich programme at Ekiti State University have staged a demonstration against the management of the college for non-remittance of their school fees to the university thereby preventing them from observing the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps.

The students in their hundreds blocked the entrance of the college and demanded the prompt remittance of over N100,000,000 to the university to avoid the breakdown of law and order.

The students of College Of Education Ilorin in their hundreds stormed the campus of the school singing and dancing demanding for remittance of their school fees to the Ekiti State University for their degree courses.

The situation at the surroundings of the college was tense as the students cluster in groups discussing their plights and the next step to be taken.

Security operatives were stationed around the area to prevent the breakdown of law and order with bonfires on the roads leading to the gates of the college.

The over 1,500 degree  students affiliated to Ekiti State University accused the management of College Of Education Ilorin of collecting N7,000 per session and remitting N28,000 to the university and still default in payment since last year.

The situation is likely to affect them in observing the one year mandatory service of the nation since the deadline is less than a week for the closure of the registration.

Students have insisted on prompt payment of the over N100,000,000 owed the Ekiti State university to be effected today, the State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Muhammad Lade in turn assured that the money would be paid to the university on Friday.

It would be recalled that a visitation panel set up by the Kwara State Government to probe the activities of the state owned tertiary institutions chaired by Professor Sheu Jimoh had indicted the former acting provost of the college, Doctor Abubakar Ibrahim of not capable of running the institution.
