Summit University Blends Engineering and Innovation through Drone Mastery
Summit University, Offa (SUN Offa), is charting a new course in technology education with the launch of its hands-on drone training programme at the newly established Kola Balogun College of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering (KBCOAIDE) and the College of Innovation and Computing Technology (COICT). The practical sessions, which began three weeks ago, immerse students in the exciting world of First-Person View (FPV) drones giving them a rare opportunity to design, assemble, and fly high-performance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Through these sessions, students gain real-world experience in assembling drone components such as frames, motors, and flight controllers, and fly FPV drones using specialised goggles that stream live video from the onboard camera. They also learn vital safety procedures, propeller balancing, and flight control techniques all of which prepare them for careers in drone engineering, precision agriculture, security, and digital innovation.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Abiodun Musa Aibinu described the programme as a game changer that bridges the gap between theory and practice. He remarked that with the support of MOMAS Group and the university's partners, Summit University is nurturing a new generation of drone experts ready to transform Nigeria's technological landscape
One of the dedicated focus areas being developed within the colleges is Drone Communication Technologies, domiciled in the Department of Communication Engineering. This emerging area explores how advanced communication systems enhance data transmission between drones and control stations an essential capability for next-generation UAV applications in surveillance, logistics, and environmental monitoring.
In addition to students from the host Department, the programme also welcomes participants from other collaborating departments including Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Cybersecurity. This interdisciplinary participation ensures that learners approach drone technology from diverse perspectives, integrating computing, communication, and engineering principles for holistic innovation.
The initiative builds on the strong support of MOMAS Group and the visionary leadership of its Chairman, Engr. (Dr.) Kola Balogun, whose contributions have positioned Summit University as one of Nigeria's foremost centres for applied Artificial Intelligence, digital engineering, and unmanned systems.
Parents are encouraged to enrol their wards in this forward-thinking programme, which equips students with globally relevant skills and offers access to scholarships, professional certifications, and career opportunities. As Professor Aibinu aptly stated, we are not just flying drones; we are launching futures.
