Senator Mustapha Demands Urgent Fix for Deadly Oko-Olowo Intersection
Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, has called on the Federal Government to urgently address safety concerns at the Oko-Olowo intersection on the outskirts of Ilorin, Kwara State, following another fatal accident at the site over the weekend.
The appeal comes amid rising public outcry over the recurring tragedies at the intersection, which has become notorious for fatal crashes. Senator Mustapha expressed confidence that the road would receive government attention, disclosing that he had personally engaged officials from the Federal Ministry of Works, including the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to prioritise the issue.
“I have urged the Minister to deploy engineers for an on-the-spot assessment of the Oko-Olowo intersection to identify structural defects and implement permanent solutions. This recurring loss of lives is unacceptable and demands immediate federal intervention,” the Senator stated.
Senator Mustapha commended Umahi for his prompt response and reiterated his commitment to the safety and well-being of his constituents.
He urged residents and motorists “to remain calm” and assured them that concrete steps are being taken to forestall further tragedies.
“The safety of our people is non-negotiable, and we will continue to work with all relevant authorities to ensure lasting solutions,” he stated.
The senator also acknowledged the interim measures being reportedly undertaken by the Kwara State Government.
He stressed that the efforts of the Kwara State Government would complement the Federal Government's planned interventions, which are expected to be more comprehensive and permanent.
