According to a news report from Punch, the 2023 Kwara State Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships have started yielding promising results, with the discovery of two talented amputee athletes in the Lafiagi Centre, Edu Local Government Area.

The two athletes, Omar Saidu, an SS1 student at Lafiagi Secondary School, and Mohammed Alhaji Issa of UBE Centre School Lafiagi, are set to represent the state in the National Youth Games and the Sports Festival.

Saidu excelled on the track, winning the 200m and placing fourth in the 800m events, while Issa demonstrated remarkable skill in the javelin event.

The Lafiagi Centre was part of the Kwara North Zone of the State Schools Sports, which concluded on Friday.

The event was characterised with thrills and pulsating moments, giving the pocket spectators at the centre something to cheer about.

The executive chairman of the Kwara Sports Commission (KWSC), Coach Bola Mogaji, said that the aim of the event, which is to take sports to the grassroots in the state, has been fulfilled with the discovery of new talents.

“The mission of the Kwara State Sports Commission of taking sports, particularly athletics, to the grassroots to discover hidden talents is yielding positive results,” Mogaji said.

On the discovery of the two amputees, Mogaji said, “These two athletes really showed tremendous ability as potential feature champions for the state and the country”.
