Kwara Ex-Media Workers Yet to Receive Salaries
Three months after the redeployment of 106 staffers of Kwara state government-owned media houses to ministries, the affected civil servants are yet to receive their November and December salaries, investigations by Daily Trust have shown.
The state government had in October, 2012 embarked on a mass redeployment of staff of The Herald Newspapers, the State Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara) and Television Authority, (KWTV) with 106 editorial and non editorial staff affected.
A letter from the Office of the Head of Service (HOS), Alhaji Dabarako Mohammed dated October 30, 2012 said it was a "right-sizing"exercise to rescue the media organizations from bloated workforce which inhibit them from meeting their financial obligations especially payment of salaries.
Investigations by our correspondent however showed that most of the affected staff are yet to receive their salaries.
Some of them who spoke to our correspondent confirmed that they had just received an alert for November salary in January, leaving them with an outstanding of December.
Those in the senior cadre have, however, not been lucky as they are still being owed November and December salaries which could not be claimed in their former offices.
"Yes, we have not been paid our November and December salaries but they have promised to pay us any moment from now. We are expecting it probably this week", one of the affected staff told Daily Trust yesterday.
The commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Tunji Moronfoye had on a state radio programme blamed the delay on the ongoing process of transferring the affected staff to the mainstream civil service.
When contacted yesterday, he said, "Almost everyone has received their November salary. Anyone who hasn’t has not completed their paper work or has not reported to their new duty post".
