Kwara: NNPP Senatorial Candidate Canvasses For Local Government Autonomy
A Kwara-based politician who is the candidate of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) for the Kwara North senatorial District at the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Kolo Jiya has noted that Nigeria can solve its perennial problems of insecurity by giving adequate autonomy to the local governments.
Jiya stated this during an interview in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, North Central Nigeria.
Jiya noted that insecurity which is the country's major problem is caused by unemployment which he suggested can be solved by giving enough autonomy and funding to the local governments who will in turn engage the youths.
“The problem we have in this country now is insecurity and that problem emanated from the idleness of the youths hence the need to engage them” he lamented.
“Like I have said severally, the autonomy of the local government is paramount, local governments should be allowed to stand on their own because, this is the only way that what is meant for the state can get to the youths because they are around all these local government areas” the party Senatorial candidate explained further.
“if the money meant for the local governments gets to them, little projects will be coming on, employment will be coming on, they will be encouraged in agriculture, even infrastructures and you know an idle mind is the devil's workshop“ he said.
Jiya also encouraged the government to invest in agriculture and encourage the youths to go into farming as it is the viable means to end hunger in the country, adding that, “we need to make use of the vast fertile land we have in this country in order to end hunger“.
The senatorial candidate urged the people to put party popularity aside and examine the candidates that are contesting for the elective offices in the forthcoming elections, 2023.
He said, “people should put party popularity aside and examine the candidates because they are the ones that will occupy the office, popularity of the party should be secondary, but the capacity of the candidate is paramount.”
