Kwara Senatorial candidate blasts FG on failed promises, supports state police
Kwara Central Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the 2023 general elections, Bolaji Abdulganiyu Abdullahi, has carpeted the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, national government for failing to fulfill its electioneering campaign promises to Nigerians.
At a media chat with newsmen in Ilorin, the former Minister of Sports said President Buhari's campaign promises to improve the economy, fight corruption and solve insecurity have not been fulfilled by the APC government since 2015.
On insecurity, he said “as complicated as the problem of insecurity is now, we know where we were in 2015, we know where we are now.
“These people have not only failed to solve the insecurity situation as they get it, in fact, but it is also infinitely more complicated now than it was at the time they had taken power.”
Bolaji, who threw his weight behind the creation of state police, argued that ” the policing model of the country used since independence when we had a population of just 60m cannot work for the same country where we now have about 250m people.
“So the country's security or policing template will have to change, I am fully in support of community policing and state police.
“I believe that though people say if you have the state police system, the governors will use it to oppress their opponents.
” We can make laws, not for today, but we can make laws forever. If we have the fear that the state governors may abuse the state police, we can build within the legislation that allows certain safeguards to ensure that the state governors are not able to abuse the law.
” We cannot have one police system over the whole of Nigeria from Abia to Zamfara State and the gentleman in Abuja as the Inspector General of Police, no matter how brilliant or committed he is, cannot be the one person that decides what happens in the Nigeria police.
Bolaji asserted that he believes the security architecture of the country needs to be overhauled completely.
