. Urges citizens, motorists to be calm

Kwara State Government will soon execute some palliative work to make the damaged portion of the Oko Olowo section of the Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa expressway passable, Commissioner for Works Rotimi Iliasu Suleiman said on Sunday.

Speaking at a meeting held with the leadership of the NURTW and RTEAN in Ilorin, the commissioner said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved that some palliative works be immediately done on the federal road to halt the use of township roads by heavy duty vehicles with its attendant consequences on the roads and safety of lives, especially school children.

"The palliative work will begin once the rain subsides in the coming weeks (October). We appeal for patience and calm. Please help us appeal to your members to be patient as we are definitely doing something on the road pending when the Federal government will fix it," he said at the meeting that was attended by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Mallam Muyideen Aliu, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Kareem Adeoye Ariwo-ola, Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Kwara state chapter and Alhaji Abdulrahman Olayinka Onikijipa, Chairman, Road Transport Employers' Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

"This is Kwara. We are a peaceful and accommodating people. We cannot afford to let what is happening elsewhere to happen to us, whereby people will be locked out in traffic as a result of dispute over road. So, His Excellency has asked us to beg you to give us some time to effect some palliatives on the bad road. This will immediately take trailers off our inner roads."
