Students Held over Fake Currency, Cultism
An Ilorin magistrate court has remanded three students at the Federal Prison, Oke-kura, Ilorin for allegedly being in possession of fake currency.
The accused, Gbenga Omoshagba, 22 of No. 12, Adipe Street, Ibadan and Olarenwaju Moshood, 25 of No.23, Alakia, Air-port Area, Ilorin, were also accused of being members of a secret cult.
The long arm of the few caught up with the accused following a tip-off that some suspected hoodlums were residing at Ita- Amodu area,Ilorin, Kwara State.
Police said that when the accused were arrested, two guns and fake currencies were recovered from them.
The accused were arraigned on a three-count charge of being in possession of counterfeit notes, belonging to a secret cult and illegal possession of firearms.
The offences contravened sections 5(B)(C) of counterfeit, special provision Act CAP74,11(1) of secret cult and secret societies in Educational institution(prohibition)law of Kwara state, 2004 and 3(1) of firearms special provision Act CAP R11, law of the federation of Nigeria, 2004.
According to the police first information Report (FIR) on the matter, while acting on intelligence information, on September 25, police operatives from 'A' Division, Ilorin raided the house of Omoshagba (first accused) at No.46, Ita-Amadu, Ilorin, where the three accused were arrested for allegedly belonging to a gang of thieves.
FIR stated that two locally made pistols and 26 pieces of N1000 denomination notes suspected to be counterfeit were recovered from the house.
The FIR added that on interrogation, the accused confessed to belonging to the dreaded and proscribed "Eiye" secret cult.
The FIR added further that Gidado Tope and Olanrewaju, second and third accused respectively, who claimed to be final year students of Ekiti State Uni-versity Ado-Ekiti, confessed to have purchased the two guns for the purpose of secret cult activities, while the first accused could not also give satisfactory account of the counterfeit money recovered from his house.
The FIR added further that investigation conducted by special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Operatives, Ilorin revealed that the accused were members of "Eiye" confraternity and the two recovered guns were unlawfully possessed by them without license for the purpose of committing crime.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Chris Koragee objected to the bail of the accussed and urged the court to remand them at the prison custody Ilorin, pending the outcome of police investigation on the matter.
He submitted further that the alleged offence was not ordinarily bailable, and that if the accused were admitted to bail at this stage of the proceeding, they might jump bail and tamper with the investigation.
The trial magistrate, Mrs. S.B. Mohammed up held the submission of the prosecutor and ordered that the accused be remanded at Federal prison, Oke-kura, Ilorin, until November 15 when the case would come up again for mention.
