Ilorin residents petition government over noise pollution by worship centre

Date: 2020-06-28

Residents of Awolowo Way, Ilorin, Kwara State have petitioned Governor AbdulRahaman AbdulRazak over an alleged noise pollution from a religious house in the area.

Copies of the petition were sent to the state Police Command, the press and the state's Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Mohammed Saifudeen.

The residents alleged that the deafening sounds from the religious house had in the last few months made many landlords to sell their houses and relocated to new areas.

The petition urged government to call the management of the religious house to order to lessen the deafening noise coming from the four cone speakers mounted at the pinnacle of the mosque each time a call to prayer is made.

"Awolowo Way is designated a residential area but not a religious centre. Therefore, there must be a strong reason for making the place habitable to residents of the settlement for 24 hours in a day.

"The particular place of worship is not the only one in the area, but while the sounds coming from others are bearable, that of the place in question are intolerable," the petition read.

The petitioners, therefore, urged the Governor to call the management of the religious house to order to operate only on amount of decebels suitable for human eardrums just as they advised the approving authorities to maintain the designation of Awolowo Way as purely a residential area.
