Kwara CP warns residents over Ganmo monarch's death rumour

Date: 2018-02-10

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ado Lawan, has warned residents of Kwara State against peddling of false information.

The command's Police Public Relations Officer, Mr.Ajayi Okasanmi, told our correspondent on Friday that the CP had warned the residents against inciting violence by circulating rumours.

His warning was in reaction to the rumoured death of the Oluganna of Ganmo in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alhaji Atanda Kolawole, which the octogenarian later debunked as untrue.

There was drama in Ganmo as some members of the community besieged the compound of the Oluganna of Ganmo to condole with the royal family over the monarch's "death".

Our correspondent learnt that the sympathisers were confused when Kolawole personally received them.

Kolawole later spoke with journalists.

"I am not dead. A dead person cannot be addressing you right now," he said. Kolawole's son, Bidemi, explained that the rumour started few days ago when his father went to a hospital for a checkup.

According to him, his father spent only two days in the hospital and later returned but the rumour had started within Ganmo that the octogenarian had passed on.

He said, "When I was going to school, some people were calling to condole with me. I was wondering what happened as I had just left home and nothing bad happened.

"But I told them that there was nothing wrong with the Oluganna, because I still spoke with him before I left home that day."
