Kwara teachers threaten not to resume over unpaid salary

Date: 2017-12-23

Teachers in Kwara state have threatened that they will not resume for the new term on January 8, 2018, if their three months salary arrears are not paid, among other issues.

The teachers in a statement signed by the state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Musa Abubakar, on Friday said that resumption of members of the union was not guaranteed if their demands were not met before the end of 2017.

The statement reads:

The state wing executive council of NUT in session resolve among other things;

1. The union is not satisfied with respect to nonpayment of salary arrears of our members (3 months and 292 per cent) so far.

2. We are equally grossly disturbed on the position of the government not to use the Paris club fund to offset our salary arrears as pledged at different fora with the government, the union, and the other stakeholders.

3. Non-implementation of promotion arrears with attendant financial backing from 2015 till date is worrisome and unacceptable to our members.

In view of this the house resolved that these issues must be addressed immediately before the end of the year 2017, otherwise, the union cannot guarantee the resumption of our members come January 8, 2018".
