Offa council boss advocates autonomy for LGs

Date: 2012-08-20

The Chairman of Off a Local Government Area of Kwara State, Prince Saheed Popoola has said that the much expected developments will continue to elude the grassroots across the country, unless the local government is granted autonomy.

Towards this end, he urged members of the national assembly in the interest of the downtrodden masses and the overall development of the country to expedite action on reviewing the constitution so that the local governments would be granted autonomy to the extent that they would be receiving their monthly subventions directly from the federal allocations.

His words," Clearly there is no money in the local government and I want to sincerely plead with the national assembly to make sure that they properly amend the constitution because there is the urgent need for autonomy for the local government without that there won’t be development at the grassroots.

Popoola, the only (opposition) ACN among the 16 councils in the state spoke in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Offa, at the commissioning ceremony of 1.5km Samuel Adesuyi Close declared opened by Olofa of Offa,Oba Mufutau Mohammed Gbadamosi, the Olofa of Offa.

He explained  that his outstanding achievements was based on the support he received from his people because he was voted into office by majority votes.

‘’Presently we are just managing ourselves and because of the way I came to power by popular crest, that is why we are doing all that we can to make sure that we deliver dividends of democracy to our people,i want to also say that the issue of insecurity in the nation will be a continuous problem if local government issue is not well addressed" he stressed.
