NANS commends government, ASUU over decision to suspend strike

Date: 2017-09-21

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has applauded the decision made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its indefinite strike and the Federal Government's promise to meet part of the union's demands.

In a statement signed by its National Assistant Secretary-General, Abdulmajeed Oyeniyi, the association said that both ASUU leadership and government had nothing to loose, adding that each and every time the duo disagreed, the students always suffer.

The statement read: "Fundamental greetings in the name of Peace, Unity and Progress. The National Association of Nigerian Students has applauded the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for her high level of maturity displayed in reaching a consensus with the Federal Government to ensure students' time is not further wasted.

"The National President of NANS, Chinonso Obasi, who promised the entire populace of Nigerian students in his speech issued at the last senate meeting held in Kwara State College of Education said he will ensure the on-going ASUU strike does not last a month at worst. Chinonso Obasi, popularly known as Aluta IBB, said he's also a victim of same ASUU strike and he could tell the negative impact industrial actions have on students.

"The national president concluded his speech by saying he would equally advise the two fighting elephants to go into negotiation as they both have nothing at stake."
