Kwara Assembly calls for Oke-Kura Prison decongestion

The Kwara State House of Assembly has called on the state government to intervane in ensuring that Oke Kura Federal Medium Prison Yard is decongested to forestall attempted jail break and other unforseen circumstances.

This is contained in its resolutions while considering a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by a Member representing Oke Ogun Constituency, Barrister Kamaldeen Fagbemi on the incident that led to the death of six inmates at the Prison Yard.

Reading the resolutions of the House , the Deputy Speaker Elder Mathew Okedare who presided over the sitting expressed displeasure over the incident that led to the death of six inmates at the Prison Yard, stressing that the information at his disposal indicated that the affected inmates were transferred from Adamawa State and urged the State government to intervene with a view to finding an enduring solutions to the problem to ensure protection of life and property in the area.

Hon. Fagbemi had while raising the Matter of Urgent Public Importance, blamed the incident at the Prison Yard on congestion and advised that it should be decongested to the neighbouring Mandala and Lafiagi Prison Yards to ensure protection of lives and property.

Other Members who spoke on the Matter, emphasized the need by the Federal government to make Prison sustains its reformatory role, as it was in the developed Countries.

Also today, a bill for a law to establish the Kwara State Health Agency and the State Health Insuance Scheme to make the residents of the State have access to affordable health care delivery passed through a Second reading at the floor of the House.

Speaking on the general principles of the bill, a Member representing Kaiama,/ Kemanji/ Wajibe Constituency. Hon Ahmed Ibn Mohammad said the bill would take care of both Rural and Urban dwellers, give legal backing to ensure take off grant from the State government, donor agencies and Philanthropists and one Percentage of the State 's Internally Generated Revenue of the State to make the Scheme self sustaining and urged members to ensure the passage of the bill into Law.

Other members who spoke on the bill who enumerated the benefits of the scheme enjoined the state government to ensure adequate funding and proper implementation of the law to realise its objectives of ensuring access to affordable healthcare delivery system in the state.

Meanwhile, the bill for laws to amend the state Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Law, State Teaching Service Commission (Amendment) bill and Local Government (miscellaneous provisions) (amendment) bill 2016 passed through first reading at the floor of the House.
