Minister orders investigation into reported killings in Kwara prisons

Date: 2016-11-22

Nigeria's minister of interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (Rtd) has ordered an investigation into the riot that took place at the Oke Kura Prison, Kwara state. The incident, which happened last Thursday, left six inmates dead and many injured.

The minister in a statement on Monday says a committee has been set up to work together with Nigeria Prisons' management team to apprehend the culprits. He also says his administration would continue to work in accordance with the United Nation Minimum Standards for the Treatments and Rehabilitation of Prison inmates including condemned Prisoners in line with the Mandela Rules to avoid a re-occurrence of the event.

According to him, recent findings have shown that riots in prison cell are more common with condemned criminals on death row for a period of 10yrs or more. To resolve this, Dambazau assured that his administration would do all it can to restructure the country's Prison Service, to effectively play its pivotal role of Reforming, Rehabilitating and Reintegrating transformed inmates back to the society.
